UN Secretary-General Calls for Restraint Following Iran’s Assault on Israel

In the wake of the attack on the Syria Embassy, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has denounced Iran's attack on Israel.

"I strongly condemn the serious escalation indicated by the large-scale attack launched on Israel by the Islamic Republic of Iran this evening," the UN head stated in a statement. I demand that these hostilities end right now.

"The very real threat of a catastrophic escalation that affects the entire region genuinely worries me. I implore all sides to use extreme caution in order to prevent any action that might result in significant military conflicts in the Middle East on several fronts.

"I have repeatedly emphasized that neither the region nor the world can afford another war."

Iran launched explosive drones and missiles at Israel over the weekend in its first direct attack on Israeli soil, a retaliatory attack that threatened a wider regional conflict as the United States pledged "ironclad" support for Israel. What was promised?

Sirens are heard in Israel, followed by distant booms and explosions that local media have interpreted as airstrikes by explosive drones. Officials said a 7-year-old girl was seriously injured.

US President Joe Biden, who spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said he would convene a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven major economies on Sunday to come up with a diplomatic response to Iran's brazen attack.

Israel's military spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said Iran fired dozens of surface-to-surface missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted outside Israeli borders.

He said that they include more than 10 cruise missiles.

An Iranian salvo of more than 200 drones and missiles caused light damage to an Israeli military installation, Hagari said.

The Israeli military later said it was not advising residents to prepare to evacuate. This revision of the earlier alert signals the end of the threat.

Israel's Channel 12 TV, citing an unnamed Israeli official, said there would be a "significant response" to the attack.

Iran vowed to retaliate for an April 1 Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus that killed seven IRGC officers, including two senior commanders. Tehran said its strike was punishment for "Israeli crimes". Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack on the consulate. Read More Articles : Recent Breaking News
